The financial, food, fuel and climate crises are individually serious issues, but in combination their impact could be catastrophic for the global economy. Perhaps we stand at a crossroads. Even as we move into a global economic downturn there are growing calls for an accelerated transformation towards low carbon and resource productive economies. To move forward will require new and more efficient solutions, technologies and products alongside behavioral change. Climate change is now universally recognized as a significant global environmental challenge and as a consequence, debate over the measures needed to tackle climate change has moved up to the top of the agenda amongst civil society, business and government. The United Nations Global Warming Conference in Copenhagen in December 2009 highlighted the major challenges and opportunities associated with climate change as we move towards post 2012 carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction targets. In July 2008, the UK raised the bar by announcing a target of cutting

WGGW Conference & Expo 10 themed “Impacts of the Global Recession on Sustainable Development, Global Warming Policy and Markets will provide a platform to discuss the future opportunities and challenges related to the design, development and commercialization of low carbon innovation, technologies, products and services. WGGW Conference & Expo 10 will include invited and refereed papers from academics, consultants, entrepreneurs, investors, technology providers, designers, sustainability, environment and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) managers as well as other business functions. The event will be a unique learning experience, networking space and an opportunity to think. From the standpoint of a renewable energy project developer, the key components of the law itself are:

the establishment of a renewable energy target system which starts at the national level and eventually works its way down to individual energy-production entities;
a mandate that China’s state power grid companies purchase, favorably dispatch, and build transmission lines to renewable power sources and gasoline wholesale companies purchase liquid bio-fuels;
general guidance on establishing purchase prices for renewable energy that are based on the principles of benefiting renewable energy development and being economically reasonable; and
a description of the types of fiscal and tax incentives that will be developed to support the renewable power industry and specific projects.
As to the first point, the Plan provides specific 2010 and 2020 targets for a host of renewable energy types. It sets forth as a “Guiding Principles” (section 2) the “speed[ing] up [of] the development and deployment of hydropower, wind power, solar energy, and biomass energy.”

MARY FOWLER is Professor of Geophysics in the Earth Sciences Department at Royal Holloway, University of London which she led from 2002 to 2008. She is from a scientific family: her father Peter Fowler was Royal Society Research Professor of Physics at the University of Bristol, his father was Ralph Fowler, the Plummer Professor of Theoretical Physics at Cambridge, who was married to Eileen, Ernest Rutherford’s only child.

Ernest Rutherford was New Zealand’s most eminent scientist, winner of the 1908 Nobel Prize. He discovered the atomic nucleus and dominated 20th century experimental Physics. Rutherford came from the Nelson district, and was educated there and in Christchurch, before becoming one of Cambridge’s first research students. His great discoveries were made at McGill University, Manchester and Cambridge. In this lecture Professor Mary Fowler, his great-granddaughter, assesses his legacy.

The discoveries made by Ernest Rutherford and his colleagues played a major part in shaping the 20th century. The impact was far beyond science and not only in the high politics of war and power - the new understanding of the atom underpins much of what we now do in our daily life.

Now, a hundred years after the award of his Nobel Prize in 1908, what contribution does Rutherford's work make to the 21st century? Four examples will be taken: one in basic science, two in environmental problems, and finally a guide to a wider outlook.
1. Geophysics - the use of radiometric techniques to study the earth and Planets
2. Isotopes in the environment - the example of atmospheric methane
3. Energy and the greenhouse - the revival of nuclear power as a least-worst option
4. Science as an international community: the collaboration for peace

The Institute has located a comfortable lounge bar downstairs at The Horse and Trap, where members and the public can meet and take part in a range of discussions. Participants are free to buy food and beverages from the bar and talk with the speaker and each other, exploring the latest ideas in science, the humanities, technology and the arts.

In a new development there will be two types of events: Cafe Scientifique and Cafe Humanities, depending on the topic.

SINGAPORE: A Singapore woman has died, another is in a coma and 111 people have received medical treatment from food poisoning linked to a single
street food stall, health officials said.

A 57-year-old woman died on Monday after eating last week at the street stand selling Indian rojak, which is usually a combination of fried seafood and egg with gravy, the health ministry said in a statement late Monday.

Another woman, aged 59, is in a coma and 27 people have been hospitalized with severe abdominal cramps
, vomiting and diarrhoea after eating at the same food stall, the ministry said.

Police are investigating the death, the ministry said. A woman who was two-months pregnant suffered a miscarriage after falling sick from the contaminated food, the Straits Times reported Tuesday.

The ministry closed down the food stall but said it hasn't yet determined exactly which food caused the outbreak. Customers who fell sick said the gravy tasted strange, the Straits Times reported.

The idea of using wine as an ingredient in cooking can be apparent as a profligacy. Unless the dish calls for a fairly expensive bottle, I would stick with incorporate left-over wine, or well made' daily styles. A splatter or 2 of wine can actually give a lift to a dish. There's nothing relatively like a slow-braised casserole, where the wine is the main liquid ingredient. Many dishes simply cannot be made without wine: Coq au Vin, comes to mind but wine can also be extremely versatile in the kitchen. It can be used to de-glaze, for macerating and marinating food, and for poaching. Wine instantly adds texture and flavour to a dish.

Lazy Otter BarNestled on the banks of the River Ouse, this riverside restaurant and bar is the ideal place to find some peace.

Just off the A10, it’s nearer than you think. Halfway between Cambridge and Ely The Lazy Otter is a great destination to watch the world go by. While dining in the restaurant visitors can gaze upon the majestic fens of East Anglia, with boats and barges drifting past on the river. Outside there is a spacious garden overlooking boat moorings.

On the old Roman road called Akemen Street a pub has been in this spot since the 1700s. Originally known as the Charles in the Oak - in reference to the young King Charles II’s evasion of Oliver Cromwell’s soldiers by hiding in an oak tree – the pub was renamed the Lazy Otter in 1987. Refurbished in July 2007 the establishment is now run by Steve Purcell, an experienced manager and member of the prestigious British Institute of Inn Keeping.

Lazy OtterOffering a large selection of dishes to choose from The Lazy Otter caters for all tastes. Classics such as 14oz T-Bone steak or Rainbow Trout are available served with all the trimmings. There is also an extensive bar snacks menu for those with a smaller appetite and a broad range of sandwich, baguette and jacket potato fillings on the lunch menu. Plus there is a special children’s menu offering healthy meals of an appropriate portion size. Six real ales are on tap and the extensive wine list is one which can provide variety time after time.

There’s always something going on at The Lazy Otter. Live entertainment for the summer season starts in May 2008 and barbeques are a weekend institution. A key location along the Ouse Valley Way there’s lots to see and do at The Lazy Otter. That 150 mile long distance footpath may be a little more than most visitors will want to do but there are plenty of other options. Lazy Otter Circular riverside walks can easily be embarked upon in either direction along the Ouse from the pub. Just ask at the bar for ideas!

Families with children are more than welcome. The Lazy Otter has facilities for younger children with a large enclosed play area including a new pirate’s ship. There are ample parking facilities for both coaches and cars in our spacious car parking area.

The Lazy Otter can cater for large groups of 50 or more people wishing to have a group outing to small private parties of two or more. You can relax in the sunshine outside and survey the relaxing ambience of the riverside location or dine with friends inside enjoying the pampered personal service from the helpful staff.

Brilliant village pub find!

I have recently heard that The Black Bull Pub and restaurant had been taken over by the previous owner of the 8 Bells, Saffron Waldon and the Crown and Punchbowl, Horningsea we decided to see what they had done with this once tired village local. On arrival I have see the menu of the restaurant is re vamped. I have also noticed that they had employed the acclaimed new chef from the Boathouse, Ely and The Cock, Hemmingford Grey. i am very pleased to see a good selection of local ales and even a local lager leading us to believe they would also source their food locally... always a good sign! I have enjoyed every mouthful of our food (Seabass and a choice from their Home Made mix and match Pie selection). It is so nice to see a village pub succeeding in these difficult times.

A daily specials board recommends wild mushrooms on crostini with melting Brie, rabbit and orange marmalade soup and poached Wagu beef fillet in a prune and mustard sauce. A kids' menu is available too. A bargain lunch menu includes a free dessert with every main course ordered - and the desserts are to die for... zesty lemon tart with fresh raspberries, double chocolate brownie and treacle tart to name but three. The Pudding Club meets monthly to further test these culinary extravaganzas and a Luncheon Club for over 60s is also a popular inclusion.

On a Wednesday lunchtime the place is comfortably full at 12.30 with most diners opting to eat in the buzzy bar area. Here we find a mixture of regulars savouring the ales at the bar, a group of three 'Ladies who Lunch' enjoying colourful salads at a round table in the window and businessmen from Cambridge entertaining clients. If you really can't leave your work in the office you can always access the free WiFi. At the rear of the pub is a decked area with patio heaters for the more hardy amongst us.

Joel Palmer runs the Crown as a family business and interacts splendidly with his customers. He and his excellent staff are always friendly and the service is always first-class. If you feel the urge to sample a few more real ales you can always leave your car in the car-park and spend a night in one of the 5 delightful bedrooms. The Crown is a place to return to again and again as it caters for every taste and provides excellent well-presented food and extremely good value.

My husband and I stayed in this hotel for 2 nights with the purpose of our stay being leisure, primarily to visit universal studios. This hotel was perfect for just that. It was conviently located to universal--not walkable but I don't really think that any hotel is within walking distance, because the roads are very busy and the intersections are large. But overall it was reasonably priced, clean and the breakfast was pretty decent.

First two nights we had room in second floor. I think that floor were more quiet than the 10th floor where we stayed the 6 nights. The views were great from 10th floor.

Both times the room were clean.

The breakfast is great.

There is Wallgreens and lots of restaurants near.

Complimentary shuttle takes you to Universal, and there is wireless internet in this hotel.

Staff is great in this hotel.

BUGS...We had little red ants for sure. If you have ever been bitten by one you will understand what a nuisance they are. We did have to change rooms. The front desk was very accommodating. They were all over the tile, bathroom counter and kitchenette counter. I also heard there was a bed bug problem. I did inspect my room and didn't see any signs of them...maybe we just got lucky with the room.

If you are traveling in the summer when it will be warmer here and would like to swim...think again. This is the smallest pool I have ever seen. In fact, when I saw it I thought it was a hot tub!

A lot of ambulance calls to the hotel next door. Not sure what was going on there the 5 days we were here.

On a good note. The hotel is a short distance to Universal Studios and the complimentary shuttle was always on-time.

There are quite a few restaurants around but not really within walking distance. Except for Wendi's and The Cracker Barrel on the side of the hotel.

I checked in very late at night and the front desk clerk, (I believe her name was Ana), was great. She helped me with the directions to near by attractions and gave great recommendations to the local restaurants. The staffs friendly smile was greeting me every time I passed by. I want to thank everyone for making my stay so pleasant and I will recommend this hotel to everyone.

Sophie is one of the UK's most successful young chefs. During her three years studying at Westminster Kingsway College in London, she was a regular competitor in national competitions and culinary salons. She won 15 medals, including eight golds, the most prestigious of which was the Gold Best in Class award at the Salon Culinaire at Hotelympia.

She also won the top prize in the NZ-UK Link Foundation Culinary Challenge in association with The Craft Guild of Chefs, which offers a young British chef the chance to work in New Zealand with top chefs. Sophie was not only the first female chef to win this tough challenge, but she was also the youngest competitor. Sophie has continued to compete and was one of the final three competitors chosen to represent the UK in the World Chef Skills Competition in Tokyo in 2007.

Sophie regularly appears on ITV's Daily Cooks and UKTV's daily programme Market Kitchen. She appeared in the BBC Two series Food Poker in autumn 2007.

my own experience is that we don't get found for events, although we list more than anyone else. If you are looking for theatre, cinema, things to do, events etc, you should find us, especially if you are looking for a specific place/venue. We list more than any other local site and this is not, as far as I can see, reflected in searches, perhaps because the listings last only for the duration fo the event? So perhaps we need to devise a way to expose all our event venues so they will be found more readily).
